Macquarie Government launches SOC-as-a-service to enhance Australian sovereign cyber security capabilities

26 September 2019 - Macquarie Government, part of ASX-listed Macquarie Telecom Group (MAQ), today launched a new security operations centre as-a-service (SOCaaS) to address the evolving threat landscape faced by Australian Government agencies.

The new centre will leverage Macquarie’s trusted security specialists in Canberra and Sydney to provide full cyber security coverage including 24x7 event monitoring and alert response. The service will operate through a security information and event management (SIEM) system that will enable Macquarie to monitor workloads and events while ensuring compliance.

“Government agencies often struggle to attract strong security talent and they need these scarce resources focused on much more than monitoring,” said Aidan Tudehope, Managing Director, Macquarie Government.

“SOCaaS places that role in the hands of reliable professionals whose sole job is to manage it, freeing Government resources to focus on other security tasks.”

Macquarie will expand its existing graduate program to give more skilled Australian graduates experience with the new service, responding to and solving increasingly complex incidents.

“Building the right sovereign capabilities is vital both to our ability to hold ground in the war on cybercrime and remain competitive in an increasingly digital economy,” said Tudehope. “A report by the ABS earlier this year highlighted Australia’s digital economy has grown by $14 billion under the current Government.”

The new service also comes on the back of Australia’s 2020 Cyber Security Strategy. In its discussion paper, the Department of Home Affairs highlights it receives regular “feedback about a cyber security skills gap in Australia”.

“All government agencies need to be exemplars in taking a holistic approach to cyber security and building the right skills for our future,” said Tudehope. “We look forward to working with the Government on the new strategy and continuing to play our part through our newly enhanced graduate program and our cyber security scholarship with Western Sydney University (WSU).”
