The approach

The program of work has evolved and expanded over the life of the partnership. We currently use a combination of ad hoc surveys and existing data sources (e.g. new vehicle sales, car parc, business counts), to feed into industry reports, forecasting (e.g. EV sales and car parc growth projections), quarterly updates, magazine articles, and ad hoc queries.

The challenge

The automotive industry is facing some fundamental issues, while also undergoing generational change with the advent of new vehicle technologies. Accordingly, we engage in ongoing conversations with key industry opinion leaders to ensure the research remains topical and relevant.

An EV plugged into a charge point. In Australia, the tipping point of EVs over ICE vehicles is still several years away, but by conducting comprehensive automotive market research before this point, organisations can gain a competitive edge, mitigate risks, and capitalise on opportunities in the evolving electric vehicle market.

The insight

Recent ad hoc projects have been focused on skills shortages, uncovering insights into the experiences of automotive apprentices, and benchmarking technician pay rates across different workshop environments. These studies have highlighted some of the unique benefits offered in the sector, as well as the value of investment in training and development when it comes to finding and retaining technicians.

A futuristic concept image of last mile transport. The image shows motorised scooters with person sized bubbles around the seat to protect the rider from the elements. Automotive market research is important to the development of last-mile transport.

The outcome

Project outputs are being used by industry stakeholders at all levels to inform business decision making and underpin strategic planning.
